Mihály Mosonyi, an outstanding figure of Hungarian music in the 19th century earned praise from such contemporaries as Ferenc Liszt and Richard Wagner. Also an organizer of musical life with a lasting heritage, he died 150 years ago, in 1870, at the age of 55.
His Piano Concerto in E minor, one of the best works of his early period, is informed by the models of Beethoven, Schumann and Mendelssohn. Now it will be performed by Valentin Magyar, a young pianist who has taken part with success at several international competitions.
Also written in 1844, the year of the concerto, Mosonyi’s string sextet will be performed in an orchestral arrangement by Anima Musicae Chamber Orchestra, which has been appointed National Youth Orchestra for 2018–2020.
