Triumph of the Body. Michelangelo and Sixteenth-Century Italian Draughtsmanship

Following extensive renovation, the Museum of Fine Arts reopened in the autumn of 2018 with a unique exhibition focused on the enigmatic small bronze representing a horse and its rider associated with Leonardo da Vinci. The next show, opening in the spring of 2019, will be dedicated to the unparalleled draughtsmanship of the other genius of the Italian Renaissance, Michelangelo.
Drawing played a central role in the art of Michelangelo, who left behind a unique œuvre not only as a sculptor, but also as a painter and architect. More than 700 of his drawings have survived, while his art focused almost exclusively on the representation of the human body. The Budapest exhibition presents thirty of his nude studies, borrowed from the world’s most prestigious collections, like the Teylers Museum in Haarlem, the British Museum in London, the Casa Buonarroti and the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, the Louvre in Paris, the Albertina in Vienna, and the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford.
Michelangelo’s masterpieces, including several drawings made for the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel and the Last Judgement, will be presented in the context of fifty drawings by some of his most talented contemporaries, such as Leonardo, Raphael, Signorelli, Pontormo, Bronzino, Salviati, and Rosso Fiorentino.

The exhibition is on view between 5 April and 30 June.
